‘The Wedding Party 2’ Generates over N73 million Naira

‘The Wedding Party 2’ Generates N73m in 3-days

The anticipated sequel to the Nigerian romantic comedy “The Wedding Party” opened in Nigeria Cinemas across the nation on Friday, December 15, and with it came an early Christmas for its producers as it reportedly made over 73 million Naira on its opening weekend.

The movie is reported to be the highest grossing movie in an opening weekend ever in the Nigerian Box office history, breaking its 2016 predecessors N36 million Naira record.

Mo Abudu, Chief Executive of Ebonylife TV, on of the producers of the movie, announced the movie’s success on her Instgram page. She wrote:

“what can I say, but thank you, Lord. Thank you, Nigeria. The Wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai now goes down as the highest opening weekend ever at the Nigerian box office for both Nollywood and international films!

Last year we did N36m on #TWP1 for our opening weekend, now we have doubled that, this is evidence that “Yes We Can” and we have!

Nigeria let’s continue to break this record together, to be the highest grossing film of all time! So that we can tell the world that “We Can”.

“The wedding party 2-Destination Dubai,” ‘naturally‘ set in Dubai and centers around the accidental engagement between the best man, Nonso (Enyinna Nwigwe) and one of the bridesmaids in TWP1, Deirdre (Daniella Down), and the roller-coaster wedding that follows. The original cast was joined by Nollywood stars including Patience Ozokwor (Mama G), Omoni Oboli and comedians Seyi Law and Chigurl who were a welcomed addition to the line up.

The glamorous and nationally publicized destination wedding of TWP1 leads, Adesua Etomi (Dunni) and Banky W (Dozie) in late November 2017, definitely created the buzz that ushered in the financially record-breaking sequel. However, it would take a truly ingenious script, stellar directing and possibly a good mix of cast members to keep fans willing to make a 3rd TWP trip to the cinema.
